Bighorn sheep are wild sheep with silky coats similar deer.Males, known as rams, can be five feet long, about 40 inches tall at the shoulder, and weigh 350 pounds; females are smaller.
In spite of their size, bighorn sheep are nimble on mountainous terrain--thanks to sharp cloven hooves with elastic pads. Rams have curving horns which are about 18 inches in circumference at the base, and up to four feet long; the female's horns are smaller. They eat grasses, flowers and young plants.
In Glacier Country's Clark Fork River Region, you can see hundreds of bighorn sheep at KooKooSint Sheep Viewing Area on Highway 200, about eight miles east of Thompson Falls.
