LEWIS & CLARK IN MONTANA'S GLACIER COUNTRY

As the bicentennial of the Lewis & Clark expedition approaches, the people of Glacier Country are starting the commemorations early. Follow footsteps of Lewis & Clark from Cut Bank, down into Missoula, and through the Bitterroot Valley. Click any of the buttons below to find out more about Lewis & Clark sites in Glacier Country:

1. Camp Disappointment and "Fight Site." Lewis called it “Camp Disappointment” because the Marias River and Cut Bank Rivers—although quite beautiful—dashed hopes of reaching 50 degrees north in latitude. “Fight Site” near Cut Bank is the site of the only clash with Indians on the entire expedition. 2. Lolo Pass Visitor Center and Packer Meadows. When Lewis & Clark reached the summit of this pass, they didn’t have the luxury of a Visitor Center at the top. But you do. Nearby Packer Meadows is a Lewis & Clark campsite. Read more>>

3. Lolo Hot Springs. The expedition didn’t take many breaks. So when they did, you know it had to be someplace special. On June 29, 1806, they stopped here to enjoy hot baths in the natural springs. Read more>>

4. Lolo. To the expedition, this was known as “Travelers Rest.” On their return trip, Lewis and Clark divided and took separate routes here. Read more>>

5. Sula/Lost Trail Pass. Lewis & Clark camped near Sula after meeting a village of about 400 Salish Indians. On their return trip, the expedition re-entered Montana very close to Lost Trail Pass. Read more>>
